Anthropic has announced the upgraded Claude Sonnet 4.6, claiming it is the most capable Sonnet model to date, with upgrades in areas such as scheduling, computing, long-context reasoning, agent planning, knowledge work, and design.
Claude Sonnet 4.6 is the default version for users with the Free and Pro and features an upgraded context window 1M tokens.

What improvements does Claude Sonnet 4.6 bring?
Sonnet 4.6 improves consistency and instructional tracking for coding, is better at computing tasks, and can complete office tasks that previously required an Opus model. According to Anthropic, Sonnet 4.6 has human-like capabilitiesfor tasks like navigating a complex spreadsheet or filling out a multi-step online form.
Additionally, the new version has a “generally warm, honest, social and occasionally funny character and very strong safety behaviors.”

It offers Opus-level intelligence at a more affordable price, making it a practical tool for a wider range of tasks. Opus 4.6 remains the best choice for agentic coding, agentic code use, and multidisciplinary reasoning, but Sonnet 4.6 offers measurable improvements over Sonnet 4.5.
Claude 4.6 is now available for all Claude programs and Anthropic also offers archive creation, connectors and compaction to free users.
