Proton has announced the launch of Proton Sheets, the online spreadsheet application with end -to-end encryption, which offers an alternative to Google Sheets and Microsoft Excel, with a focus on privacy.
Unlike traditional spreadsheet tools, Proton Sheets encrypts all user data by default, including file names and metadata. This means that no one, not even Proton, can access the contents of users’ spreadsheets. The company says the new tool is a response to growing concerns about data collection practices big tech companies’ and the integration of artificial intelligence features that may use proprietary business information for training purposes.

Proton Sheets: Features
Proton Sheets supports common formulas, data visualization through graphs and charts, and real-time collaboration capabilities. Users can import existing CSV and XLS files, which are then protected with encryption. The application includes access controls that allow users to manage who can view or edit the files.

“With the launch of Proton Sheets, we’re not just closing the productivity gap – we’re reclaiming data sovereignty for businesses and individuals,” said Anant Vijay Singh, chief product officer at Proton Drive. “The reality today is that most spreadsheet tools come from tech giants whose business models are built on data user. Now, with artificial intelligence deeply embedded in these platforms, the risks have increased exponentially. Every keystroke, every type you enter can feed their AI training platforms. This is an unacceptable trade-off. Users deserve a future free from covert surveillance and invasive data extraction. That’s why we built Proton Sheets: a powerful, privacy-focused alternative that puts control, security, and trust where they belong – in the hands of users.”
