For decades, business continuity planning meant preparing for abnormal events like hurricanes, floods, tornadoes, or regional power outages. In anticipation of these rare disasters, IT teams created manuals, conducted annual tests, crossed their fingers, and hoped they wouldn’t have to use them.

In recent years, an even more persistent threat has emerged. Cybersecurity incidents, particularly ransomware, are now more common—and often more devastating—than natural disasters. In a recent survey of more than 500 CISOs, nearly three-quarters (72%) said their organization had encountered ransomware in the past year. Earlier in 2025, ransomware attack rates on businesses reached historic highs.

Mark Vaughn, senior director of the virtualization practice at Presidio, has seen the trend firsthand. “When I speak at conferences, I ask the audience, ‘How many have been affected?’ For disaster recovery, you usually see a few hands,” he says. “But a little over a year ago, I asked how many people in the room had been affected by ransomware, and easily two-thirds of the hands went up.”

The increasing frequency and severity of ransomware attacks has forced organizations to rethink their recovery and business continuity strategies. The traditional approach of testing annually and hoping it never needs to be used is no longer sufficient. Organizations must integrate cyber-attack recovery into their daily operations, ensuring that critical services can be quickly restored after an attack.

Aligning VMware migration with business continuity is critical to addressing these threats. Organizations must invest in technologies and processes that enable rapid recovery and minimize downtime. This includes deploying advanced virtualization solutions and integrating security protocols into every stage of the migration process.

The need for a more dynamic and resilient approach to business continuity is more urgent than ever. As threats continue to evolve, organizations must be prepared to respond quickly and effectively, ensuring they can continue to operate even under the most challenging conditions.
