Google invests $15 billion for AI Hub in India

Google has announced that it intends to invest $15 billion over the next five years to build infrastructure data center to support a new artificial intelligence hub (AI Hub) in southern India. The revelation was made by Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian, highlighting that the new project will be Google's largest AI hub outside the US.

The investment is mainly for building data center capacity and AI infrastructure. Local officials had previously estimated the cost of the project at $10 billion, but Google raised the bar in its final proposal.

The project will be implemented through Google's Indian subsidiary, Raiden Infotech, which plans to develop three separate facilities in Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh). According to local media, the state of Andhra Pradesh also plans to double and expand its AI infrastructure business in the coming years.

The investment is part of a broader strategy by Google: the company has already increased its capital spending forecast for 2025 to $85 billion (up from $75 billion last February), driven by continued demand for services and AI. Google also announced plans to invest $25 billion in data center and AI infrastructure in the US.

India, with its rapidly growing digital economy, has already attracted significant investments in cloud and AI from companies like Microsoft and AWS — making Google's new initiative a crucial pole of competition in the computing infrastructure market.

Strategic importance and competition

Google is choosing India as its expansion hub to bolster its AI infrastructure presence, responding to the global surge in demand for powerful data centers. The decision reflects the tech giants' tendency to invest in regions with dynamic technology development, while ensuring cost management and scalability.

Google is expected to work with local infrastructure partners, secure energy supply agreements and ensure that the facilities are flexible to address future scalability needs.

Economic impacts and regional development

This investment could act as a catalyst for the development of the local economy of Andhra Pradesh:

  • Job creation in construction, technical teams, infrastructure operations and support
  • Activation of secondary industries (e.g. equipment manufacturers, refrigeration, infrastructure)
  • Social impact through improved access to AI technologies for businesses and organizations

The Andhra Pradesh government has already assured that various laws and initiatives will support such projects and that the new AI Hub "is just the beginning.".
