Skyfall: Six helicopters may soon explore Mars

A radical new proposal for Mars exploration promises to fundamentally change the way we approach the planet's surface, making it easier for humans to land on it. The new project, called Skyfall, is being developed by AeroVironment in collaboration with NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), and plans to drop a "nest" of helicopters over Mars (the Red Planet).

The idea? Six autonomous helicopters will be released from a space capsule into the Martian atmosphere, in an impressive technological venture that resembles a science fiction scene, but is based on real-world experiences and know-how from the success of the Ingenuity helicopter .

Reshaping exploration: From landing pad to drone swarm

Skyfall aims to revolutionize the landing of robotic or manned missions, eliminating the need for complex and expensive landing platforms. Instead, the airborne modules would be released upon re-entry, reducing costs and technical risk.

Each drone will operate autonomously, with a mission to map candidate areas for future human presence. Specifically, the helicopters will offer:

  • High-resolution images of the surface of Mars
  • Radar data for subsurface morphology
  • Detecting areas with potential water or ice — critical to the viability of future missions

Technological heritage from Ingenuity

The Skyfall concept is not starting from scratch. It builds on the groundbreaking experience of Ingenuity, the first helicopter to perform a powered flight to another planet, on April 19, 2021. The small drone made 72 successful flights to Jezero Crater, far exceeding initial expectations.

Skyfall takes the project many steps further, multiplying data collection, geographic coverage, and flexibility.

“With six helicopters, Skyfall offers a low-cost solution that multiplies range, data and scientific capabilities – bringing humanity closer to its first steps on Mars,” said William Pomerantz, AeroVironment’s head of space operations.

The next generation of aerial exploration begins in 2028?

AeroVironment announced that it has already begun internal investments and technical coordination with JPL to implement the mission. The first launch of Skyfall is scheduled for 2028, part of NASA's long-term strategy for a manned mission to Mars in the 2030s.

If approved, Skyfall could provide the critical information needed to select safe landing sitesof scientific and geostrategic interest — such as ice deposits or protected geological structures.

Why it matters

The Skyfall concept is not just a technological experiment: it is a test of principles for how we would conduct exploration and missions to extreme, such as Mars. If successful, the mission could lay the foundation for:

  • Scalable exploration with fleets of autonomous aerial units
  • Significant cost savings compared to conventional rover missions
  • Faster decision-making for manned missions and installations

Skyfall is, perhaps, the first step in a new way of colonizing space — where agility, artificial intelligence, and autonomy trump large, bulky machines.
