OpenAI is increasingly concerned about the use of its technology (mainly ChatGPT ) by organized Chinese hacking groups for malicious activities. The company finds that the tactics of attackers have evolved, but their size remains relatively limited. Malicious operations are usually small-scale and targeted at specific audiences.
Since ChatGPT was launched in late 2022, various artificial intelligence tools have been rapidly developing. The sudden rise of technology generative AI has raised concerns about its potential misuse for mass creation of false or misleading content – from text and images to voice and video that simulate a human presence with impressive accuracy.

As part of a transparency policy, OpenAI regularly publishes reports of malicious use of its tools – whether it is the automatic creation of fake news or the creation of malicious code.
Some time ago, the company deactivated accounts that used ChatGPT to write posts with political and geopolitical content (related to China).
In another case, Chinese hacking groups leveraged ChatGPT to support different stages of their attacks: open-source research, modifying scripts, troubleshooting system configurations, and developing tools for password brute forcing.

At the same time, the company also recorded another propaganda operation originating in China, which aimed to influence public opinion in the United States. The attackers created and posted divisive content and used images and user profiles that had been generated with the help of artificial intelligence.
In February, OpenAI had blocked ChatGPT accounts that North Korean hackers were using to find tools they could use for cyberattacks, but also to find information on cryptocurrency-related topics.

According to OpenAI, malicious actors also used ChatGPT for coding assistance, including help on how to use open -source Remote Administration Tools (RATs), as well as help with debugging, research and development for open-source and publicly available security tools etc.
