professionals are very positive about the impact of Generative AI (GenAI) on cybersecurity, despite the fact that this technology is increasingly being used to carry out attacks.
The above conclusion comes from a new study by Ivanti, called “Generative AI and Cybersecurity: Risk and Reward.” The report found that security professionals are eight times more likely to say that Gen AI is a net positive.
Overall, 46% of respondents considered GenAI a net positive for cybersecurity, while 44% were neutral. Only 6% see the technology as a net negative.

Additionally, 90% of security professionals believe that GenAI benefits security teams more than threat actors, while 85% said these tools will greatly or moderately improve their productivity at work.
GenAI has a range of potential applications in cybersecurity, from improving work efficiency to creating secure code . In fact, Ivanti explained that the technology could prove particularly useful given the cybersecurity workforce shortage

GenAI will make cyber attacks more dangerous
Despite optimism about GenAI's role in cybersecurity, security professionals have acknowledged that these tools are helping to carry out more dangerous cyberattacks.
Phishing, for example, has become much more effective through this technology. Research has shown that GenAI tools, such as ChatGPT, have allowed threat actors to increase the volume and sophistication of phishing emails.
Robert Grazioli, Chief Information Officer at Ivanti, commented: “As GenAI continues to evolve, its implications for cybersecurity. Undoubtedly, GenAI equips cybersecurity professionals with powerful tools, but it also provides attackers with advanced capabilities. New strategies are needed to prevent malicious AI.”
Organizations must ensure they have robust cybersecurity protocols in place that include regular updates, sharing information about new threats, and training employees on best practices for identifying and responding to potential threats.
