Researchers experimenting with the next generation of the fast mobile connectivity standard, 6G, have managed to achieve astonishing speeds of 938 Gbps. For comparison, the current 5G standard has theoretical download speeds of 20 Gbps.

In reality, 5G networks achieve average speeds that are much lower than this, but so will future 6G networks when they are mass-deployed, so the maximum speed advantage is what can be objectively measured here.
The research team at University College London used a wider-than-usual combination of frequencies to achieve this amazing performance across the 5–150 GHz. The effort surpasses that of Japanese researchers, who recently conducted a 6G network trial that achieved speeds 20 times faster than the current 5G network standard.
This shows the enormous potential that future 6G networks will have to develop, even if we consider that laboratory data usually bears little resemblance to actual network rollout by operators facing various spectrum and deployment constraints.

However, the 938 Gbps speeds of the 6G network mean that one could download a total of 20 high-definition movies in one second, which for some reason has become the best comparison for typical network speeds. Streaming in high definition or gaming at higher resolutions is a more likely application.
The 6G standard is still under the hammer, however, and the first commercial network deployments are not expected before 2030, when the final set of technology is approved. However, carriers and mobile equipment manufacturers will be ready once they get the green light from the standards body 3GPP.

In the meantime, the more research breakthroughs like that of Zhixin Liu's UCL team accumulate, the more likely it will be that the end result of 6G standardization will be better than what is currently expected compared to 5G speeds and network features.
