The U.S. Department of Justice lawsuit against Apple , filed Thursday, concerns the standoff between Apple and Beeper, the company behind the app that sought to bring iMessage to Android users.
Beeper abandoned its efforts when Apple blocked app integration at the end of last year.

Beeper, a startup founded by Pebble smartwatch creator Eric Migicovsky, has successfully reversed the iMessage protocol. It offers support for encrypted iMessage blue bubble conversations to Android users. Beeper functioned like a real iMessage, supporting replies, read receipts, group chats, emoji reactions with tapback, editing, and more.
Once Beeper was launched, the companies entered into a game, which Apple ultimately won. Every time Beeper offered solutions and fixes to keep the service running, Apple countered them. The conflict led to a dichotomy, with US lawmakers calling on the Justice Department to investigate Apple's anticompetitive behavior toward the app.
“Recently, Apple blocked a third-party developer from fixing the broken cross-platform messaging experience in Apple Messages and providing end-to-end encryption for messages between Apple Messages and Android users,” the DOJ complaint states. “By rejecting solutions that would enable cross-platform encryption, Apple continues to put iPhone users at risk by making the alternative approach more secure.”.
During this dispute, Apple argued that Beeper poses significant risks to user security and privacy, including the potential to expose metadata and enable spam, as well as phishing attacks.
The standoff between the two companies has attracted the attention of FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr, who in February asked the agency to review Apple's actions under the FCC's Part 14 rules on accessibility, usability and compatibility.
The Justice Department has cited the dispute between the two companies as part of a broader effort to accuse Apple of protecting its smartphone monopoly in order to undermine cross-platform messaging apps and competing smartphones.
The lawsuit accuses Apple of restricting cross-platform smartwatch compatibility, similar to what Migicovsky did at Pebble, a company that closed in 2016. The DOJ says that in 2013, Apple began allowing users to pair an iPhone with a smartwatch and provide access to various APIs related to Apple Notification Center, Calendar, Contacts, and location. However, with the release of the Apple Watch the following year, Apple began restricting access to the more advanced APIs.

The Justice Department says Apple is preventing iPhone users from responding to notifications they receive if they use a smartwatch from a third-party manufacturer. Apple offers limited access to third-party smartwatches through more restrictive APIs, which don't allow users to perform functions like replying to messages or accepting calendar invites, as they do on its own Apple Watch.
The lawsuit goes so far as to accuse Apple of “copying the idea of a smartwatch from third-party developers.”.
