YouTube: Testing a “play something” feature for when you don’t know what to watch

YouTube appears to be testing a new play something feature on its mobile app that directs you to a random video when you don’t know what to watch .

Youtube play something

As discovered by Android Police, this message appears as you scroll through your homepage feed — though only some users notice it.

Although Android Police reports that the button only directs users to YouTube Shorts, it was found that the feature also randomly displays full-length videos.

It's not yet clear whether YouTube takes your watch history into account when choosing the random videos it plays, nor how widely Google provides this feature.

It seems like YouTube has been working on this feature for quite some time, as it was reportedly discovered by a user on Reddit last May. Netflix also has a similarly named “Play Something” button, which was released in 2021, and it randomly shows episodes and movies that we’ve never watched before.

This feature will save you many times from the endless cycle of browsing the Netflix library, and it seems that YouTube may offer something similar.

This feature is expected to help you many times from the endless browsing cycle in Netflix content, and it seems that YouTube can offer something similar.

This feature allows you to discover new content that you might like, even when you don't have anything specific in mind. It's a fun way to discover new content on YouTube.
