Terraria: Constant demand makes it difficult for developers to move forward

Re-Logic, the developer of Terraria, has revealed that it's been difficult to move forward and start a new project due to the success and demand the game has created. Terraria is still selling well after 12 years, which is making it difficult for the team to move forward, according to a tweet from Re-Logic CEO Andrew Spinks.

Since its release in 2011, Terraria has been released on multiple gaming platforms. Over its 12-year lifespan, the game has expanded significantly through patches and free content updates. Today, it is one of the best-selling games of all time, with over 44 million units sold and a high acceptance rating on Steam.

But all good things come to an end, and Terraria's next major update, patch 1.4.5, could potentially be the last from Re-Logic. The update will include crossover content from Dead Cells and other improvements. However, this isn't the first time Re-Logic has considered ending support for the game. They previously planned to end support with patch 1.3 in 2015, but pushed through due to having more ideas and work to do. In 2020, Terraria received the Journey's End update, followed by several fixes.

The team is considering starting a second project to explore new ideas, but they haven't ruled out future updates for Terraria. They can't say for sure when the final update will be.

In June, the company revealed that it had partnered with Paper Fort Games to develop a Terraria board game. The crowdfunded offering will “expand the Terraria universe by faithfully blending the exploration of the digital game’s habitats, character progression, base building, and epic combat with board game mechanics,” according to a Steam store update. No release date has been given for the project yet, beyond the admission that it likely won’t be out until 2024 at the earliest.
