iPhone 15: Rumours say it will have a rounder design

According to leaks, the iPhone 15 may have a rounder design and a titanium frame unlike its predecessors. What phones might it look like? Will Android follow the same tactics?

Some of the rumours about the series iPhone 15 indicate a camera with periscope zoom for at least one model, the Dynamic Island for all four iPhone 2023 models, a new 3nm chip for the Pro models and, finally, a charging port USB-C across the entire iPhone 15 line (with faster charging and data transfer speeds for premium models).

A year ago, a reliable source told us that the iPhone 14 Pro would have a pill-shaped notch (Dynamic Island) and he was right. Now, the same person claims that the iPhone 15 will have a different, more rounded design!

A recent publication in Twitter gave us a glimpse of what it might look like iPhone 15. According to the VNChocoTaco, the back of the device will feature more rounded edges, mimicking the design of the MacBook Pro 2022 Apple. The corners are still present, but have been softened for a more rounded overall look. This means that while the back of the phone may change significantly, the front will remain largely unchanged.

The iPhone 15 may return to its old round design, while Apple's 2023 flagships may change from aluminium and stainless steel to titanium.

Before we analyse the possible reasons why the iPhone 15 may be more round and made of titanium, let's explore what kind of design Apple will follow! The tipster ShrimpApplePro says he is not sure of any details, but that he knows that "the iPhone 15 will feature a new design - rounded at the back rather than square."

When you think of an example of a round iPhone, the closest thing that comes to mind is the iPhone 5C. Apple's most affordable phone was very round and looked quite similar to the base of the new MacBook Pro.

It's possible that Apple will go in a completely new direction and take inspiration from Android! The phones we have in mind are the original Pixel of Google and the Pixel 2.

From the photo you can see that the original Pixel has a very interesting design. The screen is flat, and so are the bezels; however, at the point where the back of the phone connects to the sides, there's a slope that makes it more comfortable to hold. Despite this difference in texture, all other aspects of the frame are flat.

In other words, the design of the Pixel would actually allow the Pixel to Apple to maintain the "flat" frame, while making the new models iPhone 15 noticeably more comfortable to hold. This is due to the fact that the rear of the frame will be rounded (as promised by the leaks).

There are several reasons why the iPhone 15 should return to a rounded design and titanium construction - it's only a matter of time before it happens!

The truth is that those of us who follow Apple closely knew that the iPhone would eventually return to a rounded design. Because if you take a look at Apple's design cycles, you'll notice that the iPhone 6, 7 and 8 had an identical design. The iPhone X, XS and 11 they also looked alike. And now the iPhone 12 and 14 have almost indistinguishable characteristics.

Ο Tim Cook and the Apple release a new model iPhone about every three years, so rumors of an upcoming iPhone 15 in titanium with rounded edges are likely to be true!

The new models iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max are very heavy and difficult to hold with one hand. If you haven't already noticed, the recent iPhone are larger and heavier than the older models. But you know what doesn't help phones getting bigger and heavier? Flat edges and stainless steel!

Although the iPhone 14 Pro and 13 mini look great with their industrial aesthetics, they are noticeably less ergonomic to hold and use compared to the old ones iPhone 6S and 8.

The weight and limit factors are only increased when you move to the iPhone 14 Plus and the iPhone 14 Pro Max (240 g) with the stainless steel chassis. If you put the iPhone 14 Pro Max in a case, which adds another 30-50 grams of weight, your iPhone will be almost as heavy as a iPad mini 6 (297g).

Interestingly, titanium is much lighter than the stainless steel that is commonly used for mobiles such as the iPhone Pro. However, it's heavier than aluminium - a material regularly used in vanilla iPhones. Perhaps thanks to its weight, the new titanium frame will be exclusive to future models iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Ultra.

Although heavier, titanium is much more durable than aluminium. Η Apple should use very little of this material to achieve the same level of durability that it achieves with aluminium on all models iPhone the following year.

Plus let's be honest, the iPhone 14 Pro is starting to look a bit dated compared to some of the newer Android phones on the market. Compared to the Google Pixel 6 Pro, the iPhone 14 Pro looks dated with the triangular camera design and muted colours. Even other Android flagships look better: for example, the Oppo Find X5 Pro has a ceramic construction and stitching on the back, while the Xiaomi 12S Ultra is available in a leather version that makes it look like a camera of the Leica. Design circles are an integral part of the iPhone, but it's no longer just about usability. It's not just the function (the weight and sharp edges), but also the look!

To summarize, I'd like to reiterate how quickly Android phone makers adopted the flat-edge design of the iPhone 12 when it first appeared. It is not at all surprising that this took place.

It doesn't matter which company copies the other. All that matters is that Android didn't need to get a less comfortable design than the iPhone when there are other great hardware variations.

Ironically, this is the reason why there is hope that the Samsung, η Xiaomi, η Motorola, η Oppo and the Vivo they'll take another page out of Apple's book and get back to making phones that are more comfortable!

None of us want our Android devices to suffer from the same hardware problems as the iPhone.

Overall, the more rounded design of the iPhone 15 offers improvements over previous models, including better handling and ergonomics.
