As Google goes through the unnecessarily complicated process of combining both the Meet and Duo apps, it's now adding a feature for easy mute-unmute in video calls. In an update on the Google Workspace blog, the company announced that Google Meet will soon let you unmute yourself by holding down the spacebar and unmute yourself by releasing it.

If you use Zoom often , this feature may seem a lot like push-to-talk — and that’s because it’s essentially the same thing. Zoom obviously didn’t revolutionize this feature, but it does make it easily available during video conferences, which is useful whenever you want to mute yourself during a meeting but not for too long. Cisco ’s Webex has a similar feature, while Microsoft Teams lets you unmute using a Ctrl + Spacebar shortcut.
Google says it will start rolling out its own version of the shortcut to all Workspace users on September 9, but it may take up to 15 days for you to see it. Once it arrives, it won't be enabled by default , so you'll need to enable it from within Google Meet's settings
Google's attempts to merge Duo and Meet left us with the new Meet app (the one that combines both Duo and Meet), the old (Original) Meet app, and a Duo shortcut that leads to Meet. It's really something only Google could have thought of. That said, I'm pretty sure the new push-to-talk feature is coming to the new Google Meet app, but it's still not exactly clear if it's coming to the Meet (Original) app, as Google will eventually discontinue it .
Last week, Google announced some other updates to the platform. An improved and updated voice control behavior for “Hey Google.” This update will make Google Assistant inactive when a specific device is in a meeting to avoid interruption.

The company also announced updates to other platforms, such as improved Calendar authentication with OAuth 2.0, additional flexibility features for Sheets, guest login, and collaboration for Drive.
