Instagram is testing a new full-screen feed feature and an updated navigation bar in hopes of making content on the platform more discoverable and engaging. The test, which has been rolled out to a “limited number of people,” according to Meta spokeswoman Seine Kim, is the company’s latest attempt to compete with TikTok in the social video space.

While Instagram has already started testing a semi-full-screen view for its main feed, Mark Zuckerberg previewed the full edge-to-edge feed in his Stories and promises that the new design will be tested by some in the community soon . “We want to make it easier to discover content and connect with friends,” Zuckerberg writes. “Photos are still an important part of Instagram, and we’re working on ways to improve how they appear in a full-screen Feed. Some people will start seeing this test soon. I’m excited to hear your feedback! ”

The latest iteration of the full-screen design keeps tabs at the bottom of the page and features post, activity, and messaging icons in the top right corner. While Zuckerberg touts the changes as part of a broader initiative to base recommendations on AI, the feed layout is very reminiscent of TikTok’s. Zuckerberg previously said the company would focus on new users and Reels, and given Meta’s Facebook revamp announcement, Meta is working hard to compete with its rising social media competitor.
