Netflix has secret codes. How do you use them?

The secret Netflix codes can make it much easier to find something new to watch.

If you're a Netflix aficionado, you probably know that the service is less than impressive when it comes to organization. Like many apps and programs these days, it relies so heavily on the algorithm to deliver content that it can be difficult to simply pinpoint topics or genres that interest you. However, instead of using Netflix's categories, try using their secret codes.

Now, it's not like Netflix is maliciously hiding these secret codes from you. The company simply uses a system of codes to denote different categories of content. Each broad category has its own code (20 in total), but within each of those categories are a number of hyber-categories with their own codes.

For example, the genre “Action and Adventure” on Netflix has code 1365, but in this category there are 14 subcategories, including “Hijacking movies” (20541), “Spy action and adventure” (10702) and “Comic and superhero movies” (10118). Overall, there are 267 unique codes for use. But where do you find them and how do you use these codes?

How to use Netflix's secret codes for better browsing?

To browse all 267 Netflix secret codes, head over to Netflix-Codes.com. The site has all the codes organized by category so you can read or quickly jump from category to category from the sidebar.

Once you have a code you want to use, you'll need to head back to Netflix. Unfortunately, you won't be able to browse the service's codes in the app on a smartphone or tablet. These codes only work when you're watching the service from a desktop browser. Hopefully, that'll change in the future, but for now, you'll have to watch Netflix on your computer to take advantage of this trick.

You can simply enter the code of your choice into the Netflix search bar or go there directly from the link below, replacing (xx) with the code of your choice: https://netflix.com/browse/genre/xx

If you don't want to have to go back to this site with that code every time you want to browse more specifically, you can use the Chrome extension Better Browse for Netflix. This extension adds a drop-down menu to the Netflix window, giving you access to all categories and subcategories. It's a quick way to take advantage of the code system without having to know any of the codes beforehand.
