Regulators in the US have warned that the defects could increase the risk of accidents.

In the case of the trunk, opening and closing it could damage the coaxial cables that connect the rear cameras to the center display. This, in turn, could cut off the feed.

Both Tesla's Model S and Model 3 cars are affected and included in the recall.

"Over time, repeated opening and closing of the trunk can cause excessive wear on the coaxial cable," states a document published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

"The unavailability of the rearview camera display may affect the driver's view of the rear view and increase the risk of a collision."

Tesla says it is not aware of any accidents, injuries or deaths related to issues with any of the recalled vehicles.

The company led by Elon Musk estimates that 14% of recalled Model S cars and only 1% of recalled Model 3 cars are affected by the problem.

The recall does not affect any owners in the UK, but American Tesla drivers can take their cars to a dealer for a free repair.
