WhatsApp stores most of its data locally on your phone, rather than in the cloud like most messaging services, which as a method has some drawbacks. Chats are kept on your phone, and while the data can be easily backed up, there's no official way to migrate chats between Android and iOS devices. Fortunately, that's about to change.

WhatsApp has been working on cross-device support for a while now, which would allow you to send and receive messages from any phone, tablet, or computer – just like any other messaging service. Migrating conversations between different platforms is a key part of this functionality, and now the feature appears to be in the works.

It's not yet clear when the functionality will be available, but it's sure to be a popular feature for those looking to switch mobile ecosystems. WhatsApp has previously said that any unofficial means of migrating chats across platforms, which usually involved third-party apps, is against the company's terms of service and can lead to account suspension.
