Specifically, in September 2018, the airlinerevealed that the personal information of 420,000 customers had been stolen.

At the urging of lawyers, PGMBM announcedthat a number of clients who exceeded their expectations have signed up to the group set up for this purpose, in fact, it is the largest participation in a data breach group in the history of the United Kingdom.

According to lawyers, each claimant could receive compensation of up to £2,000, bringing the total cost to British Airways to around £800 million.

PGMBM partner Tom Goodhead said: “British Airways passengers are left feeling disappointed by what has happened. They are entitled to compensation from what was once a trusted airline, which treated personal information carelessly and laxly, leaving it vulnerable to malicious hackers.”

"We trust companies like British Airways with our personal information and they have a duty to all their customers and the public at large to take every possible measure to keep it secure. In this case, it failed miserably."

The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has also imposed a record fine on the company for the breach.

The initial fine of £183 million was reduced to £20 million in October due to the impact of COVID-19 on the company's finances.

The fine is independent of the new lawsuit, for which affected customers can continue to sign up until March 19.

A similar case against Easyjethas already attracted more than 10,000 plaintiffs.

In a statement, British Airways said: “We continue to vigorously defend the disputes relating to the claims arising from the 2018 cyber attack. We do not acknowledge the evidence of damages that has been suggested and has not appeared in the claims. ”
