Recently, the Fedora development team announced some of the changes that will be in the next stable version of the operating system. Currently, Fedora 32 is the latest stable version, which was released on April 28, 2020.
However, the exact release date of Fedora 33 is still unknown. According to the official notes from the development team, the proposed release date is between October 20-27.
What changes does Fedora Linux 33 contain?
New Btrfs file system
Last month, it was announced that the latest version of the operating system would contain some very significant changes. One of them is the replacement of Ext4 with the new Btrfs. This means that from now on, Fedora will come with Btrfs by default.
However, some of the distributions of the system will continue to ship with the Ext4 system. Specifically, Btrfs will only be available in workstation distributions, as well as in some other versions, for example Fedora for ARM devices.
Nano – The new default Text editor
Another big change in Fedora 33 is the new default Text editor. As you know, Fedora has always shipped with the VI Editor. However, future releases of the operating system will feature the Nano editor as the default terminal.

Of course, the VI application will remain installed in future versions of the operating system, and will be available to users through the vim-minimal package.
GNOME desktop environment
According to the GNOME, the next stable version of the software will be released a month earlier than Fedora 33. In order for the new operating system to contain the latest version of the software, the development team decided to wait for the release of GNOME 3.38.
In addition to application updates, the latest version also brings improvements to some of the system packages. Some of these packages are:
- GNU C Library 2.32
- Golang 1.15
- LLVM 11
- GNU Make 4.3
- Node.js 14.x
- Perl 5.32
- Python 3.9
- Erlang 23
- LXQt 0.15.0
Because development of the system cannot continue before the release of GNOME 3.38, the development team is currently studying and improving some of the problems that exist in the old version.
