The Greek Police and the Cybercrime Unit are on the ground after a fake recruitment SMS that is being sent from an unknown source to Greek citizens.
This message calls on citizens to present themselves immediately at the nearest Police Department to be issued a travel permit, with the aim of joining the well‑known military incident with Turkey that has occupied the media and the political leadership of the country.
The sender of the fake message appears to be listed as the Ministry of Defense, which would certainly make many of our fellow citizens question the authenticity of the message.
This is not the first time that fraudsters have targeted citizens through SMS campaigns. GSM network vulnerabilities have been used in the past to deceive citizens, and SecNews had timely and authoritatively published the security flaw in question in this article .
The Hellenic Police launched an investigation into the incident and, in order to properly inform citizens, proceeded with the following statement calling them to ignore the SMS as it is a scam:
Attention! A clearly fraudulent message is circulating. Citizens are asked to ignore it. The Cybercrime Division of the Hellenic Police is conducting an investigation regarding the following message (SMS) that is being sent to mobile phones.
