With the new year comes new technologies that will give us innovative ways to charge devices . A new startup called Guru is promising a future without cables, as it has unveiled a technology for true wireless power transmission, which will allow devices to charge using high-frequency radio waves.
Guru said it will release three products – a charging station that could wirelessly charge devices at a short distance, an enhanced version of the home station that offers a larger perimeter, and a Roomba -like robot that will move around the house.
Guru uses millimetre waves (mmWave) in its products. Although high-frequency radio waves are used in 5G networks to increase data storage and reduce latency, they are also good at enabling high accuracy.
In this case, the company uses this capability to identify a device and send radio waves that conduct electricity to charge it.
However, the distinguishing feature of the gadgets is a new technology called Smart RF Lensing, which allows them to control and send radio frequency beams through the air, thus enabling charging of even small gadgets and IoT.
Furthermore, since the beams are concentrated and targeted, they are harmless to users.
Since the technology is not built into current smart devices, a small receiver will be needed on the back of each device for wireless charging to work.
Guru is already in talks with device manufacturers to create receivers that are as small as possible, and it also wants to make its charging faster, as existing Qi wireless chargers are currently much faster.
While Guru's products are not yet perfected, they appear to have laid the foundation for a new era of truly wireless charging.
