Salt containing plastic? The problem of plastic pollution may seem very remote from our daily lives until we realize that we are literally pouring plastic onto the plate we eat.
A new study that examined 39 different brands of salt from around the world found microplastics in 36 of them, a rate of 92 percent.
It's a stark reminder that our addiction to single-use plastics is taking a toll on our ecosystems.
“Recent studies have found plastics in animals, marine animals, tap water and now salt,” Mikyoung Kim, Greenpeace East Asia campaigner who collaborated on the study, said in a statement
“It is clear that there is no escape from this plastic crisis, especially as it continues to leak from waterways and our oceans.”
The amount of plastic in salt varies by brand and country, according to the study, published this week in Environmental Science & Technology. There were three that contained no plastic at all and some with as little as 28 pieces of microplastic per kilogram (kg) of salt. The most heavily contaminated cases had up to 13,000 pieces of microplastic per kilogram of salt.
The chart below shows the amount of microplastics by country of salt origin.
The concentration of plastic was higher in sea salt compared to mineral, or salt from lakes. The highest levels were found in Asian countries, with Indonesia having the highest concentration of microplastics.
Based on the above findings, researchers estimate that the average adult consumes 2,000 pieces of microplastic each year from salt alone.
Enjoy your meal..
