One of the biggest changes in the recently released Windows 10 October update, referred to as version 1809, is the addition of a dark theme for File Explorer.

Undoubtedly one of the most anticipated features in Windows 10, dark mode makes File Explorer easier to use, especially during the night, so it is no surprise that so many people wanted this feature to be part of the operating system.
But, as many long-time Windows users may recall, obtaining a dark theme for File Explorer was never an easy thing. Requests regarding this issue first started appearing during the Windows 7 era, when File Explorer was still called Windows Explorer.
With the release of Windows 10, Microsoft started to pay more attention to user feedback. As a result, File Explorer's dark mode quickly became one of the top feature requests, with thousands of votes across most feedback platforms, including the built-in Feedback Hub. Earlier this year, Microsoft announced that it was finally working on it, aiming to launch it in the October 2018 Update.
The update is finally here and along with it comes the dark theme, although we must note that it is not enabled by default. Paradoxically, many users are not even aware of its arrival, as there is no direct way to enable it.
To enable the dark theme in “File Explorer” (File Explorer), you must first allow Windows 10 to use the dark mode as well.
To do this, go to Settings > Personalization > Colors and select the default app mode > Dark, or for those using English settings: All Settings> Personalization> Colors> Choose your default app mode> Dark. The next time you open File Explorer, you will be able to see the dark theme in action.
