Following the release of Ubuntu 18.04 LTS in April, the Canonical Development Team has announced the final beta release of Ubuntu 18.10 Desktop, Server, and Cloud.
Ubuntu 18.10 took the code name Cosmic Cuttlefish, from the founder of Canonical, Mark Shuttleworth. A notable fact about this release is that it is the final and only beta version, scheduled for the 18.10 cycle.
The official release date of Cosmic Cuttlefish is October 18.
What’s new in Ubuntu 18.10 Beta?
Initially the appearance of Ubuntu is set to change with the new Yaru GTK theme – previously called Communitheme – with the new Suru icons. A new theme was expected to arrive in 18.04, but that plan did not work.
Changes have also been made so that the installation of Ubuntu Desktop is now faster. This is due to the enabling of Zstandard data compression by default.
Regarding the Server, the next-generation Subiquity server is here for faster installation and live session. The new installer does not contain previous options, therefore the “debian-installer” image remains available.
As expected, Ubuntu 18.10 Beta comes with GNOME 3.30 desktop environment as the default. Thus we will have all the new features of GNOME with some visual improvements. This release is powered by Linux 4.18, which brings obvious fixes and better hardware support.
The out-of-the-box Android was another exciting feature that was rumored to arrive with 18.10, but the development team changed its plans for this release. Let's hope this feature will arrive with the next version.
