A Nokia phone exploded and killed an 18-year-old girl who was talking on the phone and charging it at the same time.
It all happened in India, and an article in the British newspaper Metro reveals that the girl, named Uma Oram, died after the explosion. The explosion caused fatal injuries to her arm, leg, and chest. It is not known if she had any other injuries, although it is reasonable to assume that her face and head would have been most affected by the phone bursting into flames.
Despite being rushed to the hospital, the girl ended up dead, although the exact cause will be determined after an autopsy.
Uma's brother, Durga Prasad Oram, told the aforementioned source that the phone in question was a Nokia 3310, although an image showing the device seems to suggest that it was actually a Nokia 5233.
“He put the phone on charge while talking at the same time. Its battery suddenly exploded. Before we could find out what exactly happened, Uma fell unconscious. She was dead in the hospital,” he said.
HMD Global, the new owner of the Nokia brand, says that the device in question was not manufactured under its ownership and is actually a model that was launched a long time ago when Nokia itself was responsible for manufacturing phones and was an independent company.
“While we cannot verify the facts of any of these reports, we can confirm that the mobile phone in question was not manufactured or sold by HMD Global, the new Nokia phone manufacturing company formed in 2017 to create a new line of Nokia devices. As HMD Global, we are committed to producing high-quality devices that deliver powerful user experiences and meet high customer expectations,” the company said.
