WPP CEO Martin Sorrell said that Google and Facebook should be worried! But why would anyone think that about two such successful companies?
Martin Sorrell, in a conversation with author and columnist Ken Auletta during Advertising Week in New York, stated that the two companies will likely face government regulations.
When asked if businesses should worry about the government, he replied: "I think they should, no government is going to allow a company to go to $1 trillion.".
The CEO stressed that giants Facebook and Google should embrace their roles as media companies and not just as technology companies. This fact divides them but also unites them.
Martin Sorrell believes this stance is due to the pressure both companies have been under. On the one hand, Facebook has wavered after the revelation that Russians ran ads on the platform during the election, and on the other, Google has faced a counter-terrorism crackdown in the European Union.
“With rise and size comes responsibility,” he stressed. Whether it’s because of Vestager, or because of the European Union’s pressure, or because of brand safety, or because of the threat of regulation or the threat of Steve Bannon’s exit from the White House, Facebook and Google will inevitably become friends, or friendlier frenemies.
Finally, he did not miss the opportunity to comment on the new anti-Jewish ads that have recently been circulating on the Facebook platform.
