As we said in our previous article today ( here ), we are experiencing perhaps the largest ransomware in global internet history. Hackers, taking advantage of Microsoft system vulnerabilities (exploits) leaked by the NSA, have launched an unprecedented attack on organizations, hospitals and companies around the world.
How exactly the worm works (what its behavior looks like) has not yet been commented on.
Attackers are using a Windows exploit that was adopted from the NSA's EternalBlue tool to infect computers with WannaCry . Microsoft has already released a patch for this vulnerability, but many users and organizations have not bothered to update their systems.
The malware infects a computer by exploiting a vulnerability in SMB file sharing. Older versions of Windows are most affected by this, especially since Microsoft no longer supports Windows XP or Windows (server) 2003.
What can you do to protect yourself from this universal-global attack?
What each of us should do immediately is:
- To apply the latest Microsoft patch update that he will find here (Microsoft has also released a patch for Windows XP for this specific attack).
- Do not open any e-mail from an unknown recipient that refers you to a URL address.
- Have an antivirus program installed and keep it up to date.
- Also be careful if you are watching streaming movies and series from your computer and on the sites they refer you to while trying to open the file.
- It's best to avoid torrents for now, at least. If you can't do without them, scan your files before opening them with some reliable protection software.
