GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is a raster graphics editor. It is available for all major platforms (download links at the end of the post): Linux, Max OS X, and Windows, and you can download it for free.
GIMP is a multi-functional photo editing tool. GIMP is an acronym for GNU Image Editing Program. GIMP is suitable for a variety of image manipulation tasks, including photo editing, compositing, and image construction .
GIMP has many capabilities. It can be used as a simple paint program, a high-quality photo editor, an instant batch processing system, a mass-production image renderer, an image type converter, etc. GIMP is scalable and extensible. It is designed to be augmented with plugins and extensions to do almost anything. The advanced scripting interface allows anything from the simplest task to the most complex image editing processes to be easily scripted.
One of the strengths of GIMP is its free availability from many sources for many operating systems. Most GNU Linux distributions include GIMP as a standard application. GIMP is also available for other operating systems such as Microsoft Windows or Apple's Mac OS X ( Darwin ).

The first version of GIMP was written by Peter Mattis and Spencer Kimball. Many other developers have contributed recently, and thousands more have provided support and review. GIMP releases are currently orchestrated by Sven Neumann and Mitch Natterer and the other members of the GIMP team .
