The technology companies that fell victim to a $100 million phishing scam last March were none other than giants Google and Facebook, as Fortune reveals in an exclusive report.
When the incident first became known, authorities revealed the arrest of a Lithuanian man for committing the fraud. Evaldas Rimasauskas, posing as a hardware manufacturer based in Asia, was contacting representatives of giant technology companies that were conducting multi-million dollar transactions with the supplier.
Rimasauskas managed, through fake emails and documents, to deceive employees of two large American companies, siphoning amounts of $100 million. The authorities chose to keep the identities of the companies secret.
Fortune, citing law enforcement as well as interviews with key figures in the case, combined with the above disclosure, managed to reveal the names of the companies.
As became known from these sources, Facebook turned to the U.S. Attorney's Office in Manhattan (which specializes in prosecuting financial crime) and requested assistance to recover the money it had paid for fraudulent invoices.
The company confirmed to Fortune that it fell victim to the fraud:
“Facebook managed to recover most of the lost money shortly after the incident and is cooperating with law enforcement authorities to conduct an investigation”, said a Facebook spokesperson.
Google also admitted that it was one of the companies that fell victim to the fraud, stating that “once it detected the fraud, it immediately notified the authorities”. Mountain View also confirmed the recovery of the lost funds.
