A new report from Bloomberg says that Apple is working on multiple new AR features for its upcoming iPhone. Apparently, Tim Cook is taking AR "very seriously" and intends to bring the technology to the public.
Apple has created a team to work on new hardware and software that will eventually lead to AR features for the upcoming iPhone, Bloomberg reported on Tuesday. The team is led by a former Dolby Laboratories executive and includes experts who worked on Oculus and HoloLens, which were released by Facebook and Microsoft, respectively.
The Cupertino company also bought several small businesses that worked on AR hardware, 3D gaming, and virtual reality software.
Apple is working on a series of AR products
The team, which brings together various augmented reality experts, will not only be working on features for the next iPhone, but also a range of AR products. Apparently, Apple intends to develop a pair of digital glasses that would wirelessly connect to a phone and transmit video or app content to the user.
Hundreds of engineers are working on the technology. Some of them are focusing exclusively on AR features for the new iPhone. Apple plans to give users the ability to take a photo and then change the depth of the entire image or the depth of specific objects. A separate feature will allow users to isolate a specific object in images and tilt it 180 degrees. Another AR tool will allow objects and virtual effects to be placed inside images.
This report is in line with recent analysis by Ming-Chi Kuo, who predicted that the next iPhone will have an innovative camera equipped with an infrared illuminator and receiver.
