Big day for Ubuntu fans, as Canonical has just released the final version of the Ubuntu 16.10 Yakkety Yak operating system for desktop, server, and cloud computing.
Ubuntu 16.10 (Yakkety Yak) has been in development for the past six months, but today, October 13, 2016, it is now officially available for download in the company's repositories. The new operating system is coming for everyone who wants to use the latest versions and technologies of software and GNU/Linux on their personal computers, or in the cloud.
The most exciting feature of the new Ubuntu 16.10 is the Linux kernel 4.8, which brings support for the latest hardware released, but also contains some updated components that are mostly based on the GNOME 3.20 Stack.
So some of the pre-installed applications are based on the latest GNOME 3.22 Stack, except for the Nautilus file manager, which remains at version 3.20.3. The LibreOffice suite comes in at version 5.2 and Mozilla Firefox at version 49.0.
The new Ubuntu 16.10 also features an experimental Unity 8 session, which is installed by default and accessible via the login manager. Canonical added Unity 8 mostly for testing purposes, although it knows that it won't work on all computers.
Ubuntu 16.10 Yakkety Yak will be supported for nine months, until July 2017, which is the distribution's end of support date. After that date, it will no longer receive software and security updates, which means you will need to upgrade to the next Ubuntu release, or use the stable Ubuntu 16.04 LTS Xenial Xerus release.
Ubuntu diehards can download the new Ubuntu 16.10 with Linux kernel 4.8 in Desktop, Server and Cloud editions by the end of the publication.
