Yahoo is trapping users who want to leave its service, due to the massive hack it suffered!
If you're a Yahoo user, you'll find that you can't opt out. Users of the service's email service are being blocked from leaving it and joining Google or another email provider after the company disabled an email forwarding feature.
The news comes as a shock to users already reeling from the company's announcement of a massive breach that exposed the personal information and login details of 500 million users. It was also revealed that Yahoo agreed to scan all of its users' incoming emails on behalf of a US intelligence agency in 2015.
It appears Yahoo made the change in an attempt to prevent a mass exodus, with several users reporting that they noticed that the feature, which sends a copy of incoming messages from one account to another, had been disabled in the wake of the hacking revelations.
“This is an extremely suspicious time,” Jason Danner, a user of the service for the past 18 years, told the Associated Press.
Thousands of Yahoo users have tried to leave the company after it was revealed that the company's CEO, Marissa Mayer, obeyed a US government directive to build secret software to scan hundreds of millions of emails. According to an initial Reuters report, the initiative led to the departure of Alex Stamos, Yahoo's chief security officer, in June 2015.
Yahoo declined to comment on its decision to end email forwarding, instead showing a message explaining the feature's functionality.
The message states: “This feature is under development. While we work on improving it, we have temporarily disabled the ability to enable Mail Forwarding for new forwarding addresses. If you have already enabled Mail Forwarding in the past, your email will continue to forward to the address you previously configured.”
