Quarterly updates for Android Nougat

Google officially released Android Nougat yesterday, first to select Nexus devices. In a post on the Android Developer Blog, Google also announced that its new mobile operating system will receive quarterly maintenance updates and that developer builds will continue to be released.

The post was made by Dave Burke, VP of Engineering and shows that Android Nougat comes with a regular update schedule for the next few quarters.

Devices will receive updates in the form of a project preview, with the first ones set to be released this fall, although no specific date was mentioned.Android Nougat

Mr. Burke also provided some details about the upcoming preview of the project, saying that Google has already started developing it and that it will bring “improvements and final touches.”.

Android 7.0 Nougat, as we mentioned yesterday, is already rolling out for devices: Nexus 6, Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, Nexus 9, Nexus Player, Pixel C, and General Mobile 4G (Android One) as well as for devices enrolled in the Android Beta program.

It remains to be seen whether the next preview will be made available as a flashable image or whether Google will make it available via OTA, as it did with Android N Beta.

The final version of the Android OS comes with multi-window support for users, allowing them to run apps side-by-side or one on top of the other in splitscreen mode.
