Earlier this month, the US Congress announced that it had increased the budget for NASA from $1.3 billion to $19.3 billion in 2016. The huge increase shows that the US has grand plans for the red planet.
Today it was announced that $55 million of the total budget will be allocated to research into creating a deep space habitat for astronauts on Mars, according to a SpaceNews publication.
The agency would have until 2018 to create a prototype habitat under a 2016 congressional omnibus. NASA would also have to begin reporting to Congress on its progress on the project 180 days after work begins.
NASA is already working with companies like Boeing and Bigelow Aerospace to build habitats in space, but with the new bill, and the extra money, it could be forced to speed things up to comply with Congress' wishes.
For now, you'll have to use your imagination to guess what houses on Mars will look like, NASA's International Space Station manager told Space News, as it's too early to release any models.
