The iLok2 is a USB dongle that functions as a license storage device for anti‑piracy protection. While iLok1 allowed owners to carry up to 118 licenses, the iLok2 can carry up to 500.
Over time, Ilok protection gained great appeal within the professional audio community. Companies that develop advanced and often very expensive software such as Avid's Pro Tools used Ilok to protect their creations from pirates.
However, after remaining somewhat safe for a while, iLok2 – and by extension all software development companies using the PACE system – seem to have acquired a very serious problem.
During the last few days dozens of software using the Ilok system have started appearing online on pirate sites.
The releases are coming from the Scene group AudioUTOPIA which is said to have broken the protection. The group explains that with the Pro Tools they released they showcase their technique that completely nullifies the need for the Ilok system.
“Install Pro Tools together with the Ilok driver, however, it will not be necessary to work, you can disable it by pressing the Windows + R key then typing services.msc, find the “PACE License Support Win64” and right-click to stop it.”.
“Additionally, you can remove it completely from Windows Programs and Features by uninstalling “PACE License Support Win64”.”.
