NASA issued a press release today seeking online individuals interested in becoming the first Mars astronauts.
According to former astronaut and current NASA administrator Charles Bolden:
NASA is preparing an ambitious journey to Mars, and we are looking for talented men and women from diverse backgrounds and all walks of life to help us get there. Today, we opened the application process for the next class of American astronauts who will take the next giant leap in exploration. This group will launch into space from U.S. soil on American-built spacecraft and pave the way for our journey to the Red Planet.
Candidates must be highly qualified:
Candidates “must have a bachelor’s degree in engineering, biological science, physical science, computer science, or mathematics.” High-scoring degrees will be preferred.
The qualifications they must have include three years of “responsible position experience” or at least 1,000 hours of “jet flight time.”
They should also have the right body for long-term space travel.
The US space agency is expected to announce the candidates in mid-2017.
