Kaspersky Lab: helps businesses combat DDoS attacks

To help businesses address the growing threat of Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks, Kaspersky Lab is introducing its new Kaspersky DDoS Protection solution. Kaspersky Lab’s expertise in digital threats and extensive experience in successfully combating them, as well as its intelligent technologies, enable the solution to handle any type of DDoS attack, regardless of its size and complexity. Nearly a quarter of businesses in Europe (23%) consider DDoS attacks to be one of the top three corporate threats, according to a survey by B2B International and Kaspersky Lab.ddos attack Kaspersky Lab Kaspersky Lab

As one of the most commonly used extortion techniques by cybercriminals, the number and strength of these attacks continues to increase year after year, placing the issue of user protection higher and higher on the agenda.

With companies at risk of losing between $10,000 and $50,000 per day due to DDoS attacks and the potential for additional reputational damage, the survey shows that 26% of businesses in Europe consider “uninterrupted service continuity” one of their top three IT priorities for 2015.

The goal of a DDoS attack is to "drown" the information system of a website or database by using a huge number of requests and making it unavailable to users. The possible causes behind such attacks vary and can range from online hooliganism to unfair competition or even blackmail.

The low cost of attacks (someone unscrupulous can purchase on-demand DDoS attack services, paying as little as $50 per day), the inability to track down the perpetrators, as well as the large number of "infected" computers and mobile devices around the world, make DDoS attacks one of the most widespread and dangerous digital threats today.

“DDoS attacks know no bounds, with their victims ranging from large international corporations to small online stores. Moreover, they can often be part of a targeted attack against an organization, as the overload they cause on networks can be used as a distraction while attackers gain access to critical data. To protect companies from this threat and minimize their losses due to service downtime, we have developed the Kaspersky DDoS Protection,” comments Anton Porok, Managing Director for the Eastern Europe region at Kaspersky Lab.

A key element of Kaspersky DDoS Protection is the distributed infrastructure of traffic clearing centers, which are located throughout Europe. But the solution does more than just help prevent attacks. Leveraging Kaspersky Lab’s expertise and knowledge of DDoS attacks, the new solution ensures that potential threats can be detected even at an early stage. This also makes it possible to adjust system settings on a case-by-case basis and in real time, providing customers with reliable protection against financial and reputational threats.

Kaspersky DDoS Protection’s traffic monitoring and cleaning software is developed in-house. This means that the way the solution works can be modified quickly. This way, it responds to changes in the techniques used by attackers, even during an ongoing attack. In addition, Kaspersky DDoS Protection can filter most of the traffic involved in attacks on the provider’s side, if the ISP in question has entered into a partnership agreement with Kaspersky Lab. This means that only a small amount of highly sophisticated junk traffic needs to be diverted to Kaspersky Lab’s cleaning centers.

Kaspersky DDoS Protection specialists can adjust and modify detection functions and filters based on how the threat landscape has evolved at a given time. This additional layer of protection is quickly modifiable and applicable, allowing companies to enhance their security. The ability to customize security, specifically tailored to customer circumstances and the corresponding risk, provides confidence that the protection provided is the best possible.

To ensure the highest possible level of reliability, Kaspersky Lab uses exclusively European equipment and service providers to clean and monitor traffic in European countries. All traffic cleaning centers are located in Europe, and the metadata of customer traffic analyzed by the service always remains within the European Union.
