Apple, Microsoft, Facebook, Google, Yahoo! – and many, many others are preparing a protest movement against the law (Patriot Act) that allows mass digital surveillance, next May.
“It has been nearly two years since the first news reports revealed the scope of surveillance and mass collection by the United States,” the group wrote in an open letter [PDF] to President Obama, congressional leaders, the head of the NSA and the U.S. Department of Justice.
“Now is the time to undertake meaningful legislative reforms to the country’s surveillance programs that will preserve national security while also preserving privacy, transparency, and accountability.”
And, obviously, the prevention of future annoying titles like this and that which appears on the internet.
The team is naturally trying to push not only for altruistic reasons but also because global espionage, proven to harm their businesses.
Thus on May 31 of the current year, section 215 of the bill expires. Article 215 is the part of the anti‑terrorism law that the NSA uses to justify its espionage activities, specifically espionage and the collection of telephone metadata.
The group is pushing for authorities to let Section 215 of the bill expire on June 1 without renewing it. The group also says that if they decide to renew the controversial bill, it should require an independent third-party review.
