NASA NASA program Near Earth Object (NEO)'s map shows impact points around the world.
The map, released to the scientific community, depicts data collected by US government sensors from 1994 to 2013. The data shows that Earth's atmosphere has been penetrated by a large number of small asteroids. There are 556 different recorded cases over a 20-year period.
Almost all asteroids of this size disintegrate in the atmosphere and are usually harmless. The notable exception was the Chelyabinsk asteroid, which was the largest asteroid to hit Earth during this period.
The new map data could help scientists improve estimates of the distribution of Near Earth Object (NEO) sizes.
Finding and characterizing hazardous asteroids to protect our planet is a high priority for NASA. It’s one reason NASA has increased its investment in asteroid detection, characterization, and mitigation activities by 10 percent over the past five years.
In addition, NASA is developing aggressive strategies with partners in the U.S. and abroad to detect, track, and characterize Near-Earth Objects. These activities are designed to help identify a Near-Earth Object that could pose a threat to Earth with an impact.
