Nobody wants to be eaten alive by mosquitoes. So we usually resort to harsh chemicals to keep them away. Lifehacker has published a trick by user Dartorso that you might find very practical. The user offers a solution in the form of a mosquito trap that you can easily make using a plastic bottle.
There are many sprays you can use to keep mosquitoes away, but the plastic bottle trap is an environmentally friendly one. A very good alternative solution. Most of the necessary items to create the trap can be found in your home. You will need a plastic bottle, sugar, beer yeast, tape, black cardboard, and a pair of scissors.
The bottle needs a little preparation. Cut off the top and place it upside down. The secret for the trap is the mixture that you will put inside. Boil a little water, and add the sugar to dissolve it. Then let the water cool and add the beer yeast. The yeast will start producing CO2 as you come into contact with the sugar. The smell will attract mosquitoes. It is important to cool the water, so that the plastic bottle does not melt or you damage the yeast.
Darthorso explains how the trap works:
Beer yeast produces a small but continuous amount of CO2, and as it mixes with the sugar present in the water, it creates a scent that is irresistible to mosquitoes!
Thus, these tiny devils fly into the small opening of the bottle's neck and get stuck, as they cannot find an exit. The percentage of mosquitoes that remain outside is extremely low.
To perfect the trap you can cover it with cardboard. You will discover that just 10 grams of yeast lasts for about two weeks, a fact that makes the trap especially effective.
