Solar Impulse has unveiled the plane it hopes will be able to fly around the world using only solar power. The Solar Impulse 2 weighs just 2,268 kilograms and has a 72-meter wingspan covered entirely in solar cells.

The solar cells number more than 17,000, and the manufacturers hope that they are enough for its long journey. Its creators say that the single-seat aircraft is more efficient and generally better built than its predecessor. Solar Impulse 1 has made five full-day flights across the Pacific and Atlantic without any problems.
The plan for Solar Impulse 2 is to launch to the Middle East in March 2015, with landings every few days to change pilots. Its test flights will begin in May.
