Google glass: Read products by looking at their barcode

An innovative technology allows users of Google Glass to gather useful information about a product simply by looking at its barcode. The method is called barcode scanning and was presented by the international association GS1 at the Mobile World Congress, which took place in Barcelona, Spain. It has been developed in collaboration with the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) and Icare, the Swiss Research Institute.

As announced, when a barcode on a product's packaging is scanned using Google Glass, the consumer receives more information about the product, such as nutritional information and recipes, which can then be customized to personal preferences, provide special offers, display reviews from other consumers, and even send information to social networking sites.

“As consumer behavior continues to change and information seeking becomes more and more ubiquitous, the next generation of barcode scanning will become the primary means for consumers to access data. It is also a way for media outlets to engage with users in a variety of informational and promotional activities,” said Malcolm Bowden, President of GS1.

The international organization GS1

The GS1 organization is headquartered in Brussels and is represented in 113 countries around the world. It is exclusively engaged in the development and implementation of global standards and solutions, with the aim of improving the efficiency and transparency of supply chains at both the global and national levels. GS1 standards are addressed to more than 20 industrial sectors and are used by 2,500,000 businesses worldwide, which carry out over 6 billion transactions per day. In Greece, the legal and sole authorized body of the International GS1 Organization is the non-profit Association with the name Hellenic Association of Businesses for the management of international GS1 standards and the characteristic title "GS1 Association Greece".
