An interesting Facebook account giveaway scam is circulating these days, trying to trick users into handing over information and money. The scammers are using Facebook’s recent 10th anniversary to make everything seem more real.
The scam email found by Kaspersky purports to come from the “Facebook Rewards Program” and says something like this:
“In celebration of 10 years of operation on the internet and in Global Communication, we are pleased to announce that your Facebook account has been randomly selected as the recipient of $1,000,000.00 dollars for the year 2013 {Grand Rewards winner}”
Beneficiaries are invited to send Facebook their name and country of residence to an outlook.com email address.
The fake notifications also contain a link to a Sydney Morning Herald article about the history of Facebook. The email is apparently signed by Eduardo Saverin, one of Facebook's five co-founders.
If you come across these emails, ignore them. Facebook hasn't started handing out millions to random customers.
