Ruben Santamarta, a security researcher from IOActive, has discovered a way to trick a particular counterfeit money detection machine. By “tampering” the firmware of the particular counterfeit money detection machine (widely used in Spain), he was able to recognize plain paper as banknotes.
The device on which the expert conducted his research is from Secureuro.
According to the manufacturer, the counterfeit detector cannot be fooled. However, the expert proved that this is not the case.
First of all, the researcher discovered that Secureuro provides access to its firmware without even needing to be hacked. Furthermore, the firmware is not protected by any encryption system.
Additional technical details about the attack can be found on the IOActive blog.
