Deutsche Telekom announced that to protect its customers from the NSA , it is changing the routing procedures of local internet traffic, which will now be carried out through domestic servers.
A Deutsche Telekom spokesperson confirmed to V3 that the company has begun distributing internet traffic through local servers, explaining that the move is aimed at making it more difficult for intelligence agencies such as the US NSA to monitor Germans' data.
“Telekom is strongly in favor of keeping German internet traffic within national borders (national routing). In the next step we will see whether this solution can be extended to include all Schengen countries. This will make it very difficult for intelligence services in other countries to gain access to the data,” the company said.
Deutsche Telekom initially announced its plans in August.
