These days, DVDs are the "kids" compared to Blu-ray discs, and while BD discs have reached their limits, especially when it comes to PS3 games or similar applications, efforts are now turning to new discs.
The latest effort comes from Sony and Panasonic.
The two have signed an agreement to develop a new optical disc standard for professional use.
The main goal is a large capacity disk for long-term data storage.
Essentially, both companies will improve their own technologies but also exchange technologies with each other to become more efficient.
So, by the end of 2015, they promise optical discs with recording capacities of 300 GB.
After that, the standard will steadily improve, and if things go well, we will see drives up to 1.5 TB.
The reason that drives are favored in development is because drives are resistant to dust, water, and generally have the ability to survive in harsher environments than hard drives, SSDs, flash drives, and anything else.
