Russian Pirate Party calls for protest, proclaiming “Black August”

Russian Pirate Party threatens copyright owners with Black August

The Pirate Party of Russia is calling on the public to boycott all copyrighted goods in August in protest against the new anti-piracy law.

“Let’s boycott media companies, let’s not buy media discs, let’s not pay a single ruble to them,” the party chairman said, according to a report by RT.

The protest comes in response to a new anti-piracy law enacted in Russia, which will soon allow copyright holders to request the blocking of websites they deem to contain illegal content.

Websites will be able to be blocked within 72 hours of reporting a copyright infringement, without the need for a court order, with the possibility of extending the deadline if the content is not removed.

The law will take effect on August 1 and focuses on protecting copyright for video content, paying less attention to everything else, including literature, music, and software.

Many have opposing views on the law in question, but that did not stop the authorities from passing the bill through the Russian parliament.
