The official Facebook account of former US Secretary of State Colin Powell has been hacked. The hacker or hackers have begun posting some of the photos stolen from the family's email accounts Bush following a successful attack in February.
Sophos reports that the hacker managed to post various miscellany on the former Secretary of State's timeline as well as an album called “GEORGE 'DUBYA' WALKER BUSH HACKING” before the account was suspended by Facebook's security team.
Experts believe the hacker either managed to guess the secretary's password or retrieved it through another website they compromised. The second scenario assumes that Powell used the same password to protect all of his accounts, a practice that is, unfortunately, not uncommon.
The account has now been restored. The former minister says his team is working with Facebook to address the issue.
“Dear friends, as most of you have realized, my fb page has apparently been hacked. I am only sorry that you saw and read all these stupid and obscene posts until I discovered this. Please ignore them as we are working with fb to take care of the issue that has arisen. I appreciate your patience,” Powell posted when his account was restored.
