The Leap Motion Controller might be the future of computing. But it might also be a great invention that's way ahead of its time. We'll soon find out, as its release date has been officially announced.
The people behind Leap Motion have confirmed that the device will begin shipping to customers who pre-ordered it on March 13th, while it will be available for purchase for everyone else on March 19th.
“We’re thrilled to have everyone in the Leap Motion community, from developers to pre-orderers to business partners,” said Leap Motion CEO and co-founder Michael Buckwald. “We know you’ve been waiting for this, and today I’m excited to announce that the Leap Motion Controller will be available soon. We’ve taken the time to deliver a unique user experience and a robust ecosystem of apps for consumers to discover the power and magic of Leap Motion.”
The Leap platform will allow users to control their computer like in the movie Minority Report. Leap Motion is a small bar that you place in front of the computer screen and it tracks the movement of your hands.
So far, the biggest challenge for Leap Motion is getting apps to support it. Several big names, like Realmac, have already come forward with support, but there are still a few more that need to be brought on board to make the platform grow.
The good news is that the device will have its own app store called Airspace. Autodesk will release a plugin for its famous program, while Corel's Painter app already supports it. Additionally, companies like Disney and ZeptoLab will bring support for some of their titles to the device.
The Leap Motion Controller will cost just $80 and will work on Mac OS X 10.7-8 and Windows 7-8.
