Baile Zhang invisibility presentation at TED2013

Being invisible is something that humanity has dreamed of and tried to achieve for decades, if not centuries. Of course, it never did.

Baile Zhang, an assistant professor of physics at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, might finally be able to do it.

Speaking to TED Fellows, he presented his findings and gave everyone a reason to be in awe.

TED Fellows gives young researchers, artists, and techno-geniuses an opportunity to come together and present their inventions and ideas.

“Invisibility” has been shown in the past to be due to tiny particles that are blocked out by some infrared spectrum. With this principle we could fool radar and other surveillance systems.

Zhang's invention is macroscopic. When asked by Boing Boing editors how he did it, he said that the "cloak" he uses is made of two optical crystals found in nature.

When glued together, they bend light and shadows, so they can hide objects behind them.

The two-crystal “cloak” featured in the video made a post-it disappear. To prove it wasn’t a trick, Zhang pushed the post-it from side to side.
